Couples counselling for Coulsdon – A clearer way forward for your relationship

Understand what is happening between you, rebuild connection and learn how to face difficulties together

Hi, I'm Paul

Perhaps conversations quickly become arguments. Perhaps you avoid difficult subjects because they never seem to end well. Or you may simply feel that the warmth and closeness you once had has slowly disappeared.

I understand how lonely relationship difficulties can feel. More than 20 years ago, I was struggling to make my own relationship work and could not see how to create lasting change. Counselling transformed that experience and inspired me to retrain as a psychotherapist.

For the past 15 years, I’ve worked exclusively with couples. I bring professional knowledge to the work, but I also remember what it is like to sit on the other side of the room and hope that things can be different.

I work with couples from Coulsdon and nearby areas, as well as online.

Moving beyond the same old arguments

The issue you argue about is not always the whole problem. Often, reactions are shaped by deeper fears, unmet needs and ways of protecting yourselves that once made sense but now keep you apart.

My psychotherapy training helps me look beneath the visible problem. We can understand what happens inside each of you, how those reactions meet and what each partner needs to learn or do differently.

This is about more than communicating politely. It is about creating the understanding and personal change that allows a different relationship to grow.

What makes change possible

Couples are often surprised by how much can shift when the pattern between them becomes clear. What once felt personal or hopeless can begin to make sense.

You do not have to arrive with the answers. We begin with what is happening now and work out the next steps together.

These principles shape the way I work with every couple.

Working together

Couples often arrive feeling frustrated, drained and uncertain about the future. It can be difficult to know where to begin when you are talking about something so personal.

I’m calm, patient and compassionate, and I’ll do my best to help both of you feel comfortable. Although I take the work seriously, I can also see the funny side of life when it naturally arises. Counselling doesn’t have to feel heavy all the time.

I won’t judge either of you or take sides. We all say and do things we regret at times. I certainly did.

At the same time, I won’t simply sit back and listen. I’ll be actively involved – helping you understand what is happening, identify what needs to change and gently supporting you as you begin doing things differently.

You’ll have a clear plan and always know what we’re working on, why we’re working on it and what you need to do next, with step-by-step guidance throughout.

We work together, but the aim is that eventually you won’t need me.
