Couples counselling for Westerham – Helping you protect what matters between you
A calm place to understand difficulties, repair connection and build a stronger way of being together
Hi, I'm Paul
When a relationship becomes strained, even ordinary conversations can feel loaded. You may be walking on eggshells, living more like housemates or feeling unsure whether the other person truly understands you.
More than 20 years ago, I faced serious difficulties in my own relationship. We tried to change things, but nothing seemed to last. The loneliness of that time – and the difference counselling made – has stayed with me.
It inspired me to retrain as a psychotherapist and specialise in couples work. For the past 15 years, I’ve worked exclusively with couples. I combine professional depth with a personal understanding of how exposed and uncertain this process can feel.
Today, I work with couples from Westerham and the surrounding areas, alongside my online practice.
From reaction to understanding
Most couples do not set out to hurt or ignore each other. But once a pattern takes hold, each person’s attempt to cope can trigger the other person’s fear, anger or withdrawal.
We will look carefully at this interaction and at the experiences beneath it. My psychotherapy training helps me understand the inner world of each partner as well as the relationship you create together.
The work is not about finding a villain. It is about helping each of you recognise your part, develop what is needed and create a safer, more responsive partnership.
Why I remain hopeful
I see couples reach one another again after long periods of disconnection. I also see problems that once dominated a relationship become manageable or finally resolve.
Complexity does not mean impossibility. It means we need to understand the difficulty properly.
- A pattern can be changed once you can recognise it.
- Compassion and accountability can exist together.
- Each partner may need something different in order to grow.
- New responses can gradually rebuild trust and emotional safety.
These principles shape the way I work with every couple.
Working together
Couples often arrive feeling frustrated, drained and uncertain about the future. It can be difficult to know where to begin when you are talking about something so personal.
I’m calm, patient and compassionate, and I’ll do my best to help both of you feel comfortable. Although I take the work seriously, I can also see the funny side of life when it naturally arises. Counselling doesn’t have to feel heavy all the time.
I won’t judge either of you or take sides. We all say and do things we regret at times. I certainly did.
At the same time, I won’t simply sit back and listen. I’ll be actively involved—helping you understand what is happening, identify what needs to change and gently supporting you as you begin doing things differently.
You’ll have a clear plan and always know what we’re working on, why we’re working on it and what you need to do next, with step-by-step guidance throughout.
We work together, but the aim is that eventually you won’t need me.
