Couples counselling in Croydon - Helping you understand what has happened between you

So you can stop repeating painful patterns, face difficulties together and decide on a stronger way forward

Hi, I'm Paul

Relationships can become stuck in many ways. There may be frequent conflict, a loss of intimacy, broken trust or a quiet distance that has grown over time. Whatever the form, it can be exhausting to keep trying without knowing what will genuinely help.

More than 20 years ago, I was in that position myself. I loved my partner, but we could not create lasting change. Counselling helped me understand our relationship differently and inspired me to retrain as a psychotherapist.

For the past 15 years, I’ve worked exclusively with couples. I bring experience and structure to the room, while remembering that asking for help can feel deeply personal and that both partners need to feel heard.

I work with couples from Croydon and the surrounding areas, as well as online.

Seeing the whole relationship

The visible problem is important, but it rarely tells the entire story. Behind criticism may be fear or longing; behind withdrawal may be overwhelm or a belief that speaking will only make things worse.

Psychotherapy gives us a way to understand these deeper responses without losing sight of the practical changes you need. We consider what is happening within each partner, how it shapes the interaction between you and what each person needs to develop.

The goal is a change you can live: not a better conversation in one session, but a more secure and capable partnership outside it.

What I have learned from couples

Relationships can change even when the difficulties have lasted a long time. I have seen couples regain connection and solve problems that once seemed woven into the relationship.

Your current pattern explains where you are; it does not have to dictate where you go next.

These principles shape the way I work with every couple.

Working together

Couples often arrive feeling frustrated, drained and uncertain about the future. It can be difficult to know where to begin when you are talking about something so personal.

I’m calm, patient and compassionate, and I’ll do my best to help both of you feel comfortable. Although I take the work seriously, I can also see the funny side of life when it naturally arises. Counselling doesn’t have to feel heavy all the time.

I won’t judge either of you or take sides. We all say and do things we regret at times. I certainly did.

At the same time, I won’t simply sit back and listen. I’ll be actively involved—helping you understand what is happening, identify what needs to change and gently supporting you as you begin doing things differently.

You’ll have a clear plan and always know what we’re working on, why we’re working on it and what you need to do next, with step-by-step guidance throughout.

We work together, but the aim is that eventually you won’t need me.
