Couples counselling for Oxted – When you care about the relationship but cannot find a way through

Understand the patterns between you and make changes that bring greater closeness, confidence and stability

Hi, I'm Paul

You may know that something needs to change without knowing how to begin. One of you may feel unheard, while the other feels that nothing they do is enough. Both of you can end up hurt, defensive and alone.

I know that experience personally. More than 20 years ago, I struggled to make my own relationship work. Repeated efforts did not create lasting change, and I felt lost beside the person I loved.

Counselling changed my relationship and led me to retrain as a psychotherapist. For the past 15 years, I’ve worked exclusively with couples, helping them understand what has gone wrong and what each person needs in order to move forward.

I work with couples from Oxted and surrounding areas, as well as online.

Making sense of the pattern

A stuck relationship usually has a pattern: something happens, each person reacts, and those reactions reinforce the very outcome neither partner wants. From inside the relationship, the pattern can be extremely difficult to see.

My role is to help slow things down and make sense of what is happening within each of you and between you. We look at the feelings, beliefs and protective responses that drive the cycle, then identify the changes that can interrupt it.

Real progress comes from understanding paired with practice: seeing clearly, learning what to do and being supported while you begin to do it.

There may be more possibility than you can see

When couples arrive, they often judge the future by how things feel now. Yet the present pattern is not necessarily permanent.

I have watched relationships that felt empty regain life, affection and a shared sense of direction.

These principles guide my work with every couple.

Working together

Couples often arrive feeling frustrated, drained and uncertain about the future. It can be difficult to know where to begin when you are talking about something so personal.

I’m calm, patient and compassionate, and I’ll do my best to help both of you feel comfortable. Although I take the work seriously, I can also see the funny side of life when it naturally arises. Counselling doesn’t have to feel heavy all the time.

I won’t judge either of you or take sides. We all say and do things we regret at times. I certainly did.

At the same time, I won’t simply sit back and listen. I’ll be actively involved—helping you understand what is happening, identify what needs to change and gently supporting you as you begin doing things differently.

You’ll have a clear plan and always know what we’re working on, why we’re working on it and what you need to do next, with step-by-step guidance throughout.

We work together, but the aim is that eventually you won’t need me.
