How do I know if my reactions are fuelled by the past?

This is probably one of the shortest articles I’ll ever write, and yet it may be one of the most important.

Why?

Because when we react in the present to something rooted in our past—and we don’t realise that’s what’s happening—we will never truly solve the issue. Instead, we’ll keep looking for answers in the wrong place.

The problem isn’t always what is happening today. Sometimes today’s situation simply touches an old wound that has never fully healed.

There are two simple signs that your past may still be influencing your present.

1. Your reaction feels bigger than the situation.

Even you may look back afterwards and think, “Why did I react like that?”

The intensity of your response doesn’t seem to match what actually happened.

2. You lose the ability to stop, reflect and respond.

Instead of choosing your response, you simply react.

That reaction might be anger, shouting, slamming a door, withdrawing into yourself, feeling overwhelming hurt, becoming defensive, or shutting down emotionally. Whatever form it takes, it feels automatic, as though something else has taken over.

When this happens, it is often a sign that an experience from your past has been triggered. The current situation isn’t the whole problem—it has simply awakened something much older that is still emotionally raw.

The good news is that these patterns can change.

In our work together, we identify the triggers behind these reactions, understand where they come from, and help you step out of automatic responses. As you become more aware of what is happening, you regain the ability to pause, reflect and choose a response that serves you and your relationships.

The past may explain your reactions, but it doesn’t have to keep controlling them.
